How do we find peace
In a world filled with hatred?
Not with more hatred.

13 November 2013

November 13, 2015. Paris

Bob Dylan wrote a song, probably in late 1962, probably partly in response to the Cuban missile crisis. That song is “Masters of War,” and here are the lyrics:

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
...
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin’
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it’s your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people’s blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You’ve thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain’t worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I’m young
You might say I’m unlearned
But there’s one thing I know
Though I’m younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death’ll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I’ll watch while you’re lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I’ll stand o’er your grave
’Til I’m sure that you’re dead

http://www.bobdylan.com/us/songs#ixzz3rQW5uHX2

The rage there has a history, and it has not gone away or ended. But the end of that rage is simply death. That is the frightening thing about the events today in France, about this song, about the world in which we live. The end of rage is not peace, not justice. It is simply death. Look at the final verse. There’s no hope there. There is only rage and death.

And I hope that you die
And your death’ll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I’ll watch while you’re lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I’ll stand o’er your grave
’Til I’m sure that you’re dead

There are times when I wish I had a belief in a god of peace and justice. But all the gods seem to be gods of war and hatred and death. And so I do not believe. I hope, but hope comes increasingly more difficult. And I do not hope for more deaths, but I’m afraid a lot of people out there will agree with Dylan:

And I hope that you die
And your death’ll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I’ll watch while you’re lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I’ll stand o’er your grave
’Til I’m sure that you’re dead

Crawling across the sidewalk--
An epic journey.

2 May 2015
(I mean that literally; I make it
the equivalent of a 90-day hike
for me; I tried to take a photo,
but that didn't work very well.)

30 April 2015

Geese peck at the grass;
What are they hoping to find?
They look frustrated.

30 April 2015

Thursday, April 16, 2015

16 April 2014

Another morning
Waking long before sunrise...
Much, much too early.

16 April 2015

Tuesday, April 14, 2015

14 April 2015

Masses of purple--
Blossoms on the tulip trees --
One more sign of spring.

14 April 2015
(I didn't take this one.)

8 April 2015

Waiting out the storm,
Rain pounding on my car’s roof,
Lightning blinding me.
8 April 2015

Saturday, April 4, 2015

4 April 1968

Nineteen sixty-eight...
War raging, at home, abroad...
Too many martyrs.

4 April 2015

Sunday, March 29, 2015

29 March 2015

Two ducks are splashing
In a puddle, while two geese
Watch them carefully.

29 March 2015

Saturday, March 28, 2015

28 March 2015

A difficult time.
Too much anger in the world.
But not in my life.

28 March 2015

Thursday, March 26, 2015

26 March 2015

A very bad day...
Hate triumphs over kindness
In Indiana.

26 March 2015

Monday, March 23, 2015

23 March 2015

Spring?  Who said it's spring?
Ice pellets cover the lawn,
Keeping me inside.

23 March 2015

Sunday, March 22, 2015

22 March 2015

Waking this morning
To a cardinal singing
Outside my window.
22 March 2015

Friday, March 20, 2015

20 March 2015

Not very spring-like...
Cold, gloomy, now-and-then rain.
Whatever...It's spring.

20 March 2015.

Monday, March 16, 2015

16 March 2015

Seeing girls in shorts
Walking around in the sun--
Must be almost spring.

16 March 2015
(And, yes, I'm a DOM.  So sue me.)

Saturday, March 14, 2015

14 March 2015 (Remembering Terry Pratchett)

"So much universe,
And so little time..."  Terry,
You got that one right.

14 March 2015
(From The Last Hero)

Thursday, March 12, 2015

12 March 2015

The sun in my eyes,
Almost blinding--I don't care...
I'm warm and happy.

12 March 2015

Tuesday, March 10, 2015

10 March 2015

All I want to do
Is to sleep well...or, maybe,
Be able to breathe,

10 March 2015

Monday, March 9, 2015

9 March 2015

Harbinger of spring--
Driving, my car windows down,
On a sunny day.

9 March 2015

Sunday, March 8, 2015

8 March 2015

Dozing in my chair,
My book slips from my hands, and,
Suddenly, I wake.

8 March 2015

Saturday, March 7, 2015

7 March 2015

When dealing with fools,
It's hard not to be foolish.
But I try, I try.

7 March 2015

Friday, March 6, 2015

6 March 2015

Dripping from the eaves,
Freezing almost instantly,
Snowstorm's aftermath

6 March 2015

Thursday, March 5, 2015

5 March 2015

Nearing midnight, and
Here I am, more awake now
Than five hours ago.

5 March 2015

Thursday, February 26, 2015

26 February 2015

Yes, winter will end.
And, yes, spring will soon arrive.
But not tomorrow.

26 February 2015

Wednesday, February 25, 2015

25 February 2015

Ice on the windows,
On the sidewalks, on the roads.
Ice everywhere.

25 February 2015

Tuesday, February 24, 2015

24 February 2015

All I really want,
Right now, is one good night's sleep.
Even half of one.

24 February 2015

Sunday, February 22, 2015

22 February 2015

Trees weighted with snow,
Branches bent, touching the ground.
I'm staying inside.

22 February 2015

Saturday, February 21, 2015

21 February 2015

Shadows on a wall.
A bird landing on a branch,
Then flying away.

21 February 2015

Thursday, February 19, 2015

19 February 2015

A difficult week...
Trauma, pain, too little sleep...
With no end in sight,

19 February 2015

Monday, February 16, 2015

16 February 2015

No, April is not
The cruelest month.  For me,
February is.

16 February 2015
(Take that, T.S. Eliot)

Saturday, February 14, 2015

14 February 2015

A Valentine's Day...
Spent quietly together,
Content with our life.

14 February 2015

Thursday, February 12, 2015

12 February 2015

Two long sleepless nights...
Even reading is a chore..
So I'll try again.

12 February 2015

Wednesday, February 11, 2015

11 February 2015

Cold rain on my neck,
Mud clings to my cane and shoes.
An unpleasant night.

11 February 2015

Tuesday, February 10, 2015

10 February 2015

Birds pecking the ground...
Dog watching through the window...
A long winter day...

10 February 2015

Sunday, February 8, 2015

8 February 2015

I'm not nostalgic,
At least not very often.
Tomorrow beckons...

8 February 2015

Saturday, February 7, 2015

7 February 2015

Waiting for midnight,
Hoping sleep will come by then,
Watching the moon rise.

7 February 2015

Friday, February 6, 2015

Thursday, February 5, 2015

5 February 2015

I'm growing older,
And I wonder, too often,
How did I get here?

5 February 2015

Wednesday, February 4, 2015

4 February 2015

Born at mid-winter,
And winter is my season--
Cold, grey, and lonely.

4 February 2015
(Literally--Feb. 4 is 45 days from
the winter solstice, usually, and
45 days from the spring equinox.)

Tuesday, February 3, 2015

3 February 2015

Slept late and took naps,
Saw purple skies at sunset...
And played with the dog...

3 February 2015
(A perfect day?)

Monday, February 2, 2015

2 February 2015

Waiting for the dawn--
In the hours of darkness--
Suddenly, a light.

2 February 2015

1 February 2015

The month I was born--
The coldest and darkest month--
Seems somehow fitting.

1 February 2015

Saturday, January 31, 2015

31 January 2015

The half-moon shining,
Lighting my bedroom last night,
Calming and peaceful.

31 January 2015

Wednesday, January 28, 2015

28 January 2015

A fat squirrel sits
In our tree...so far, it seems,
It's a mild winter.

28 January 2015

Tuesday, January 27, 2015

27 January 2015

Just across the road,
Flash of red...a cardinal
Hopping in the grass

27 January 2015

Monday, January 26, 2015

26 January 2015

Walking carefully
On an ice-slick driveway
Testing every step...

26 January 2015

Friday, January 23, 2015

23 January 2015

Up too late again,
Chatting with friends, enjoying
What they have to say.

23 January 2015
(It's all virtual chatting now.)

Thursday, January 22, 2015

22 January 2015

Einstein said "God does
Not play dice with the world"...But
He does with our lives.

22 January 2015
("I returned, and saw under the sun,
that the race is not to the swift,
nor the battle to the strong,
neither yet bread to the wise,
nor yet riches to men of understanding,
nor yet favour to men of skill;
but time and chance happeneth to them all."

Ecclesiastes, 9:11
Some people are lucky enough
to start with a huge lead.
Musing tonight on the role of chance
in our lives.)

Tuesday, January 20, 2015

20 January 2015

Frost covers the path
But I manage not to slip...
I'm safely inside.

20 January 2015

Monday, January 19, 2015

19 January 2015

Watching the sunset--
Purple and red horizon
Framed by bare branches.

19 January 2015

Sunday, January 18, 2015

18 January 2015

Just past midnight, and,
Between the rain and the wind,
I'm awake again.

18 January 2015
(That was last night.)

Saturday, January 17, 2015

17 December 2015

January thaw--
Warm breezes and sunny sky.
But not tomorrow.

17 January 2015

Friday, January 16, 2015

16 January 2015

Memories, again...
Walking in the rain, at night,
And holding her close.

16 January 2015

Thursday, January 15, 2015

15 January 2015

Sometimes, in winter,
I remember my first love,
And smile and smile and...

15 January 2015

Wednesday, January 14, 2015

14 January 2015

Clouds lit at sunset,
Folding, twisting, in the sky,
Looming above me.

14 January 2015
(Taken about 4:30 PM today.)

Tuesday, January 13, 2015

13 January 2015

When trying to land
On our frozen pond, a goose
Slid into the bank.

13 January 2015
(And it was funny to see)

Monday, January 12, 2015

12 January 2015

Grass poking up through
Melting snow, a reminder
That winter will end.

12 January 2015

Sunday, January 11, 2015

11 January 2015

Slipping and sliding
From the car to the front door.
Thank you, weather gods.

11 January 2015

Saturday, January 10, 2015

10 January 2015

Sorting old photos,
Remembering where, and when,
And who I was with,

10 January 2015
(Pitigliano, Tuscany, Italy, October 2002)

Thursday, January 8, 2015

8 January 2015

Grey skies, bitter cold.
The moon shines through thin clouds
As light through a veil.
8 January 2015

Tuesday, January 6, 2015

6 January 2015

Distant fiery clouds
Snow reflecting the night sky
A winter sunset

6 January 2015
(Taken earlier this evening,
through a  screened window.)

Monday, January 5, 2015

5 January 2015

Out in the sun room,
Reading, with music, our dog
Curled up next to me,

5 January 2015

Sunday, January 4, 2015

4 January 2014

Late this afternoon,
A light snow falling gently,
Covering the pines.

4 January 2015

Saturday, January 3, 2015

3 January 2015

Family dinner...
Good wine, good food, and good talk...
And two dogs playing.

3 January 2015

Friday, January 2, 2015

2 January 2015

The wind, late last night,
A constant, distant, murmur,
Keeping me from sleep.

2 January 2015

Thursday, January 1, 2015

1 January 2015

Fireworks at midnight,
Sunrise at eight...one year ends,
Another begins
1 January 2015
